Honda 7.5 HP motor

I have a 1986 Honda 4 Stroke 7.5 hp Motor.How do I know if its short or long shaft?and maybe the value.I just had work done on it and it dosent fit on my Smokercraft or my 8' Livingston.This motor has been in my basement kept dry and its in really cherry shape.Any ideas?

honda outboards hold their value well, I think you should get between $700 and $800 for it. It should be worth 70% of new. Question: why doesn't it fit the smokercraft?

Yes 4 stroke.the kind you dont need to do the gas oil mix.I thought.It was my ex Bro in laws.I trade my sister 2 settings of sterling silver for it and a 10' Metzler.It dosent fit the Smokercraft.I tried and the steering bar on my 40 hp Honda dosent allow the older style motors with the large cowlings.I want to get a newer 5HP Honda.Plus my 7.5 weighs a fair ammount.The newer motors are so nice and light.The money isnt my biggest goal.I'm willing to trade for some nice downriggers or something.It just sits around not being used.I tried it on my Livingston but with my weight a friend cooler and gas tank it sank on me.

It could be direct injected with oil (like your car. stick oil in the oil reservoir and the engine injects it as needed)

I don't believe the 4 stroke technology for outboards was available or being sold at that time. If it's darn quiet and you have trouble hearing it start, and shifting into gear makes a loud noise (louder then the purr of the engine) then it's a 4 stroke.

What I've done is call around to local marina's/repair shops/outboard shops and talk to they guys and ask them the value of that outboard. Careful though, sometimes those guys will try and tell you it's not worth that much but they'll offer to buy it off you for a little over what they "say" is the value of it. Call around to a handful of different shops (the more estimates the better) and then you can figure out what it's worth and then figure out how to sell it (WL.com, craigslist, trade, sell to a marina, etc)

Sam, I believe this time your wrong. I own an 86 5 horse Honda with over 3000 hours and other than an occasional oil change I never added oil……..! Its an 86 not a 56. Four-stroke technology with outboards was quite advanced by 1986.

Don't sell this outboard short. Its a great trolling motor and you will get top dollar for it. Don't settle on a couple of downriggers. List it on Creg's List in a month or so - you won't have any trouble selling it.

Just for the sake of argument: Just because you don't have to mix oil doesn't mean it's a 4 stroke. There are lots of 2 stroke motors available that have oil reservoirs and inject the oil into the motor as needed.

stampie is correct though: Craigslist it and that sucker will go fast. If it runs, looks nice like you say it is, I bet you'll get a good amount for it and it'll go really fast...

Honda has never produced 2 stroke outboards.

I know of MANY old 4 strokes, some dating back to the 50s. Rare, but they are out there.
