Jerkbaits

Post by iPodrodder » Wed Oct 24, 2007 9:39 pm

HA! FIRST! Well, I wanted to know how good of success people are having on jerkbaits this time of year. Any specific patterns? Sizes, etc? I got one but I don't know how well it will fare in the fall weather.

I have a Japanese made jerkbait that is 3in long, silvertone body, red nose that I love. At rest it goes nose up and slowly decends about an inch/sec. It works well for bass, peacocks, mayans, and trout. Definitely one of my newer go to baits.

I did not know what a jerk bait was, so I googled it and found a very good (it looked good to me) description of what it is and how and where to use it http://www.bassdozer.com/articles/crawf ... bait.shtml .

The article started out with this definition:

fishing (noun) : A Jerk on one end of a line waiting for a Jerk on the other.

Semi-offensive, but funny.

The article only deals with the bass aspect of the lure, but I assume that the presentation would be similar for trout. I believe it was cavdad45 who mentioned that brown trout have some of the same feeding habits as bass, aggressive, predatory.

Since I have made a new goal to use artificial lures more perhaps I will get me one of these jerk baits, although based on this article from Bassdozer it sounds like it is a very difficult lure to master.

Those of you who have used them…are they more difficult to use?
Maybe I should try to master the crank baits and rapalas I already have before venturing out with this.

Any thoughts…

EDIT: Wow, just took a look at jerkbaits...$15 lure...maybe not

I caught a 14" bass at Kress Lake with a similar jerkbait. There's a report about it in that section. That's not too far from you. Also another report with a countdown minnow that did OK for browns.

They aren't all $15 lskiles. THe LuckyCraft ones are usually priced in the mid teens, but you can find other brands and Rapalas for well under $10

I definitely would recommend the Rapala jerk baits. They will catch you a bass almost 80% of the time. Size will make the difference between dinks and bigger sized bass. I have also seen 2" floating rapalas catch 2lb browns at Lacamas lake. I guess Its true what everyone saids about it just depends on what the fish wants at the time. But I Have most my luck on the Rapala series. I fish of bank, so I dont get much more than dinks. But From boat, I know it will prove successful!

Luckcrafts are supposed to be very good, but I have never spent that kind of money for 1 single lure. I rather buy 3 or 4 rapalas instead. Someday when I have some spare cash I'll go out and test out some luckcrafts. Im very interested in the Samy.

Let us know how your success goes on your next few outings
If in doubt set the hook!

I must agree with bmp2000 the LC pointer has been one of my go to jerks for awhile now . I always perfer the suspended jerk over the floating jerks . Not to say that one will out fish the other for me it's always determined by water dept and the body of water that im fishing at the time . Jerkbaits are a year round bait and it really stands above alot of other hards bait in the late fall and winter months for those suspended bass . It's also a great reaction bite bait , my only suggestion is that once you get the "tick" or a bite on a jerk bait , experience as proven that it's not a good ideal to set the hook , just lift your rod tip and reel down on the fish . I also try and prevent that bass from tail dancing by "drowning your rod " .. Once a angler perfects these technics your "loss fish" count will be less then 5% overall ... Good luck guys ..BBD:batman:

I agree totally. I prefer the suspending jerk although it has a bigger learning curve. The floater is easier for beginning fishermen and therefore more popular. Am definitely going to start looking harder at those LC lures.

BBD, it's good to hear from you again. Don't be a stranger. CAV

I use the slender pointers in 112 and the regular in 100/128 sp. I am not a fan of the smaller sizes. My jerkbait experience is only w/ smallmouth btw, I've only thrown them halfheartedly a couple of times for largies at the most.
