Top Lakes Ratings

Post by hewesfisher » Sat Apr 10, 2010 10:32 am

Don't know if I should post this here or in the bugs/problems section, but, I checked out the Top Lakes section under Lake Reports since I had never clicked on it before and noticed some really skewed data there. For example, the top rated lake in the whole state is Drunken Charlie lake (name made me wonder if it's a real lake) in King County with a grand total of 1 report that happened to be a "5". Now for the real eye opener, last report was submitted May 2006!!!

I started looking at some of the other "top" rated lakes and noticed similar stats, number 2 top rated lake is Moose Lake in Pierce County with 2 reports, last one submitted in 2005. Matter of fact, 60% of the top 10 lakes in Washington haven't seen a report since 2007 or earlier; 50% of the top 10 have 3 or fewer reports; and 75% of the top 10 have less than 75 reports. The highest number of reports in the top 10 fall to Williams Lake in Spokane County with 110 reports, Badger Lake in Spokane County with 75 reports, and Silver Lake in Whatcom County with 118 reports.

I'm not a brilliant math whiz, so I can't offer a solution, but isn't there a way to take the number of reports submitted into consideration? What about dropping lakes form the rating system that haven't had any reports in the past year or more?

Not complaining, just surprised at what I found when I clicked on the top rated lakes tab. [blink]

That's not the lakes I see in the Top Rated lakes. Post the URL you are looking at.

I see the top three lakes as-
Williams- Spokane Co.
Badger- Spokane Co.
Silver- Whatcom Co.

I think someone has "tweaked" something since I posted this, none of what I saw is there now, and it's under the same option I checked this morning. I now see the same thing you do, wasn't that way when I posted, really. :bigsmurf:

I think that hewsfisher went to the individual counties and clicked on the ratings column. Thats how Drunken Charlie was one of the top rated lakes for King county and Moose Lake was the second highest rated for Pierce county. As far as Williams, Badger and Silver Lakes, they are located on the Overall top rated lakes box at the homepage.

If the State dropdown list is set to "All" it doesn't work. If it is set to Washington it does. The other states don't have enough reports yet to make the cut. For Washington the cutoff is 10 reports. I've fixed it on my end and I'll upload the fix soon.

That's what it was Aaron, although I didn't select "All", it was just whatever came up when I clicked on Top Lakes. Now that I know, I'll always make sure the dropdown is set to WA. Thanks Aaron! [thumbup]

Nope, I clicked on the Top Lakes option under reports and didn't change anything when it came up. To do what you mentioned I would have had to go county by county, this came up as though statewide, notice the lakes I indicated that were in the top 10, they were on the same page at the same time. No matter, Aaron explained why it did that and he's got a fix in the works. [cool]
