Forum Chat Rooms

Post by Dave » Thu May 15, 2008 3:57 pm

If this has already been suggested, or if it is coming in the upgraded memberships, then sorry to bother everyone with this thought.

I notice we all kinda bounce around the forums somewhat communicating back and forth but it would be great if there was an open chat room where members could go to at any given time to communicate in real time (like instant messaging) with other members about fishin or whatever. Better yet would be to have a chat room for each forum topic so we could jump in a room and discuss that specific topic in real time.

Again, if this has already been suggested or discussed, then I apologize for bringing it back up. Thanks all. Just a thought.

I believe we do have Instant chatting capabilities for paying members when the site came out...But don't hold me to it. I like your idea though!

It seems I heard a rumor that there is going to be a chat room for premium members. Maybe if they set time aside for each forum each week. Two or three hours on Monday night for fly fishing. Two or three hours on Tuesday for Bass fishing. Two or three hours on Wednesday for Trout fishing. Two or three hours on Thursday for Saltwater fishing. Two or three hours on Friday for rod building. So on and so on. The chatroom could have a moderator to make sure nothing profane or inappropriate was said. I personally don't know what Admin has up their sleeves, but I'm sure it will be great. Maybe we should just wait and see. I'm sure Arron's plate is full right now.

Or how about a once a week chat? Sometime during the weekday in the evening? Would be fun to just talk about life, fishing, whatever with other online members...

I just think it would be nice if everyone could jump into a chat room when several folks are posting comments on a specific forum topic so a conversation could be done in real time. Rather than posting a reply and waiting for the next person to do the same. I know right now we can set up MSN Instant Messenger which I have done through WALakes.com but I don't think folks are using that to chat. For example, if you had MSN set up, we could go to that service to talk in real time. I’m just not sure how that works because I haven’t used MSN IM yet here.

Or maybe an official WL.com IRC channel on Freenode...hosting is free, IRC clients are free, plenty of people around to moderate...

I'm in no hurry. I was just bouncing between forums as usual, and the thought came to mind. I think it is possible to have chat rooms set up for every forum but I am not positive. That would allow members to click on an icon next to that forum topic and go directly into a chat room set up for that for that specific forum. Anyway, just a thought is all. I thought it might be nice to talk with each other in real time.

Dave, I believe Mike mentioned this to me when we went fishing at RS the other day. He alluded to a chat room for paying members and the annual fee for membership was below $25 I believe. Double check with Mike, but I believe the forum upgrade will include this as well. Thought I'd let ya know -- KTK

Yup, Chat will be available as part of the premium membership package. Aaron's working on the details (probably as I type) and we hope to have it up and running by the end of May, but no promises - we want to get everything implimented right.

Introductory rate will be $17.99/year. Details coming when the new site is up.

I wonder if there is a way we could see who was in the chat room at any given time. Like a counter in the corner of the Forums section that lets us know if the chat room is occupied.

Every time Ive hopped into the live chat room, Noones home! Id love to see a little counter or something that alerts you to when people are in there. Im on another forum (not fishing related) that has something like that but I dont think they use the "cutechat" setup that we use here.

the chatroom has been in limbo, one of those things that really needs some organization which I haven't had time to deal with.
