Hookum Good Leader Roll

Post by G-Man » Sun Apr 01, 2012 8:54 pm

As a fishing gear junkie I am always on the lookout for ways to keep my gear organized. For my pre-tied lures like stack bead spinners, hoochies and kokanee killers I prefer to keep them wound on foam tubes and Lindy Riggers. During the last Puyallup Sportsman’s Show, I came across a company that has taken the foam roll to the next level. The Hookum Good Company has built a leader roll system that can be used alone or incorporated into their Bait Buoy system. What I didn’t like about the Lindy riggers is that the plastic ends were susceptible to melting when coming in contact with common plastic/rubber artificial baits. I’ve put the Hookum good rigs to the test and have not found anything that will effect the ends nor the foam material. I prefer to use their larger diameter size as most of my leaders are in the 3 to 5 foot range. The design of the rig is such that one can start winding the leader at any point, easily allowing one to line up the lures for neat, functional storage. Also, the foam used on these rigs is much softer and provides ample protection for the mini Apex and Kokanee killers that I regularly use. They come standard with a snap adapter and mini carabiner for help in keeping them from wandering off. One can also purchase a tackle organizer called a Bait Buoy that will hold one leader roll, scent bottle, pliers, towel, fish club, etc that can be fitted to a Scotty/Fish-on/Folbe Style rod holder base. You can check out their complete product line at http://www.hookumgood.com.

I bought the bait buoy at the 2011 sportsman show and love it.. Clamps on to my rails and holds my scents and pliers.. I don't use the foam roll as I am a spoon'er.....

G-man, I wasn't clear what is keeping the tag end of the leader staying on the foam? Does this system use some kind of little velcro piece like the yellow leader rollers that I have bought at OE? Or did I miss something you said about that.

The business end of the hook hooks in at some point... the then what about the tag end?
Oh, and thanks for the looksie into your cutthroat gear. :-k

Quad, I was wondering the same thing about the tag end of the leader. Looking real close at the provided picture, shows only one leader loop visible. Since I can't imagine that plastic loop stuff that sticks to velcro, like the yellow leader keepers you have. Sticking to foam. And, again looking at G-mans photo. It appears the tag end of the leader is the beginning end of the rapping process. Then the next wrap crosses on top of the tag or loop end, give a bit of pull for tension and keep rolling, neatly on top of the tag end until the hooks are sunk into the foam to finish the leader. As apposed to the yellow end rolls, where the hook starts off in a plastic loop? And ends with the tag end Velcro'd to the roll.
