Need an ultra light spinning rod recommendation

Post by The Quadfather » Tue May 31, 2011 4:09 am

I'm looking for a new spinning rod, since mine recently found it's way to the bottom of the lake.:-" I am thinking of going with an ultra lite. It will be paired with a Pflueger President spinning reel. I prefer a high quality rod, G-loomis, Lami, etc. lifetime warranties, sensitive etc. 6-7' .
Anybody have any suggestions? Is anybody familiar with American Rodsmiths rods?
I have just a couple days b4 leaving town.

Not an expensive rod, but Okuma makes a version of their Celilo rod in 8'6" UL, they are a straight up noodle rod. I am thinking of getting one for pink season. Model CES-862UL-1

I also like the Loomis STR1161S 9'8" UL.

Thanks Matt, but I am trying to get away from long rods. I had been fishing an 8'6 rod from my float tube, and it's a PIA when in the tube, great from the beach or river bank of course though. I'd like to get down to 6 or 7'.

I LOVE my Shimano Voltaeus rods. They are VERY sensitive and very strong. They got them back in January and have caught a great range of fish including that 26 inch brown on it.

Okuma makes some sensitive 6 to 7 ft ultralite's. I fish tiny gear alot in lakes and personally i'd suggest goin to a couple shops and doin' some wiggle test until you find what you're looking for. One person's idea of an "ultralite" rod can be quit different than anothers. From what i've seen cabela's has the biggest selection of tiny sticks so far.
Fishing relaxes me. It's like yoga, except i still get to kill something.

Check out the rods at Outdoor Emporium. I was there recently and saw that they have the Daiwa Spinmatics in stock as well at the Quantum Teton series, both are great inexpensive rods that I can and will vouch for. Something to keep in mind is that a rod that you will be using in a float tube or personal pontoon needs some backbone to be able to slide the fish to you. I use my 6.5 foot quantum while fishing from my pontoon and it has worked out great for me. I also use a Scotty No. 280 Bait Caster / Spinning Rod Holder on my pontoon. It will securely hold any trout sized rod and reel combo and also comes with a rubber latching strap to make sure you won't lose you rod when unattended.

Well, I went through Sportco and Sportsman's warehouse tonight, I wound up getting a G-loomis SR720 ultra lite. Beautiful rod. 1-4 lb test, 1/32 -- 1/8 oz. I admit that I have always lived by the motto that the fish at the business end of the line doesn't discriminate on which rod it bites, but still this was beautiful well balanced rod so I jumped on it.

Nice! I've looked at that one before. The real ultra light rods make catching small fish a lot more fun. I don't have the means, but I'm totally gonna pick one up when I do.

I love my ugly stik ultralights -- especially the 5 footers. Very easy to manage in the boat and surprisingly strong. With a medium-sized reel and some 30lb power pro, it's possible to wrangle bigger fish out of cover without much hassle.

(Braid slices through pads & grass like butter :-$ )
