Hey, Gang: looking for any tips on fishing for bass on small lakes or ponds this time of the year. The lakes we've been tackling have some pad cover left and some docks, but no "deep" water. 15-20' max in the middle with no underwater structure thAt we've been able to locate. Any ideas appreciated!

They don't need deep water structure to be there. They will gather under schools of bait fish, perch, crappie, and trout. And they'll be looking for any crawfish that might show themselves. Look for rocks, and gravel.

Start where you catch bass in the summer, and go deeper. Also go along the contour of 10' and 12'.

Start at the docks and then go deeper from them.

The pads probably won't have any bass as the dying pads will use up the oxygen. Won't hurt to try, and then go deep from the pads.

There might be isolated rocks/boulders so look for them. Look for anything like sunk boats, and humps, small or big.

Drop shot, jigs, carolina rigs, slip shot/split shot rigs.

Drag a tube.. throw some swimbaits. Drag a dropshot, find fish and fish them slow

Thanks, guys! I'll check that article out, Fish N Fool, before we go out again. Spent a few hours at Lake Cassidy today and didn't catch a fish. We did work shallow to deep water, AMX, and marked some fish but no action. Very pretty day, air temp and water temp were the same: 42 degrees! Next trip will be to Goodwin, I think. Deeper water and we at least have a good idea where we've marked deeper fish on earlier trips.

Thanks again for the tips.

Been a week since I've been out. Hopefully soon. Of course they'll either have lock jaw or moved to their winter hiding place. [blink]

checked my notes, been 18 days since I've been fishing.

HUH small world, I lived on lake Cassidy about 35 years ago Dont think I ever fished it much though I mainly fish Stevens and Goodwin for bass back then. I fished a lot of Steelhead back then as well which i dont get to do anymore.

I would fish near break lines or obvious pieces of cover that have good deep water access(deep being relative to the lake). Big profile baits or reeling cranks into the weeds and tearing them out. It's hard to stay on top of the fish in lakes with little for them to relate to on the bottom from my experience. Try and match the forage
