OK, Problem solved.
RSEAS has the same unit and pretty much confirmed my suspicions, which was that the external Puck GPS, is not a working unit. Will have friend who it belongs to, call Humminbird support tomorrow.
Thanks again Rseas for your input.

Quad - just a note on operating a sonar combo unit while it is out of the water. Be sure to turn off the sonar portion of the unit if you are going to operate it for any length of time. If the transducer isn't submerged in water when the sonar is active, it can overheat and lose its effectiveness or just give up the ghost all together.

Thank you G-man, was not aware of that. Although on my Humm. 798ci SI, I don't believe I can turn off the internal GPS.G-Man wrote:Quad - just a note on operating a sonar combo unit while it is out of the water. Or at least I cannot if there is not a external PUCK GPS hooked into it. The issue here was to test a friends recently bought external PUCK, via an ebay purchase. However, it appears that it is not been "Seen" by the Humm. which leads me to believe it is not a functional PUCK. There is a setting on the head unit which allows it to Auto-Scan for either external or internal gps, and if it saw the external, I would have called it up, and turned OFF the internal.
Re: Help with using external gps puck on internal unit!!
Actually, I was referring to the depth sounder portion of your unit. If the sonar is active, you'll hear a ticking/thwacking sound coming from your transducer, you'll want to shut that off when you are out of the water.

It can be easier to just unplug it. Rather than try to find the 'turn off' feature in the menus. A couple minutes to a few minutes won't hurt, but a long time can overheat the transducer. No I don't know how long it would take.

That is a good recommendation G-Man. I did discuss this subject with Humminbird a couple weeks back, after purchasing and installing a transducer on my boat. Humminbird indicated that the transducer only works correctly while in water, water keeps the unit cool, sonar passes through water. The topic of overheating the transducer was also discussed. They are fine with the transducer being on when not in water, when making simple calibrations, adjustments, updates. But the risk of overheating will occur if left on for long periods of time, like overnight.G-Man wrote:Quad - just a note on operating a sonar combo unit while it is out of the water. I was turning off Quads unit when the menu items were no longer being used. And during long periods of searching the internet or the Humminbird manual for the GPS override options. I was also touching the transducer periodically, checking for warmth. Always felt cold to the touch.
