Maybe this story will help you feel better. Let's disregard the fact I hit a deer with my boat the first day I owned it, and proceed straight to the prop. After picking up my new boat in Milwaukee, I went to northern Wisconsin, and shortly after arriving in the Hayward area I bent the prop on a rock in Teal Lake. I took it to a local welding shop who fixed it for me. Three days later, I was back. The welder said, "You again? Already?" I replied, "Same prop, different lake, different rock." That time, I had hit a really interesting vertical rock formation in Big Sissibigama that screamed up from 50 feet of water to 6 inches in nothing flat. But that's not the end of the story. That same prop bit the dust for good at Tapps Lake when I roared into a bay near the main boat launch at full speed and hit a gravel bar with only a foot of water covering it that I didn't know was there. If you're familiar with Tapps Lake, you may know the place I'm referring to. In total it took me 3 attempts, but by the time I was finished with that prop it had only 1 1/2 blades left.

P.S., I've learned to carry a spare prop and tools in the boat.

Did you hit a floating log out in the middle of the lake? When the water level is high, as it is now, there may be a lot of loose debris on the surface.

I just came across this this morning on Craigslist (I hit that site about as much as this one). You didn't mention make/model, but I'm assuming outboard at that HP size?

When the dam operators raise the water level, driftwood floats off the shores and there'll be debris fields in the lake. The bulk of the trash usually is in the upper half of the lake, but the most dangerous logs are the mavericks outside the debris fields because you don't expect them. They can be hard to see if the water isn't flat calm. When arriving at Merwin, you can gauge the likelihood of debris in the lake by looking for a "bathtub ring" along the shore, i.e., if the water level is down the lake should be debris-free. But there still can be a few random deadheads at any time.
